Abstract

This paper provides an account of the enlargement works carried out at the port of Vilagarcía de Arousa, located in north-west Spain. The works involved extending the Ferrazo breakwater by 70 m, and creating a flat zone covering a surface area of 82 000 m2, by reclaiming land from the sea, extending the length of the quay up to 910 m, and equipping this zone with a roll-on roll-off ramp. The breakwater was extended with riprap and the new wharfs are caissons 42·2 m × 14·5 m × 16·0 m. The fill volume was 800 000 m3 and a total of 1 400 000 m3 of material had to be dredged. The paper provides details of the characteristics of the works, the construction process and the environmental measures that were taken, as well as the safety, operability and environmental benefits that will be experienced when the new infrastructure is in operation.
