Abstract

Active carbons have been prepared from corncob using chemical activation with phosphoric acid at 400°C using varied ratio of impregnation (RI). Porous structure of carbons was characterized by nitrogen adsorption and scanning electron microscopy. Surface chemistry was studied by IR and potentiometric titration method. It has been shown that porosity development was peaked at RI=1.0 (SBET=2081m2/g, Vtot=1.1cm3/g), while maximum amount of acid surface groups was observed at RI=1.25. Acid surface groups of phosphoric acid activated carbons from corncob includes phosphate and strongly acidic carboxylic (pK=2.0–2.6), weakly acidic carboxylic (pK=4.7–5.0), enol/lactone (pK=6.7–7.4; 8.8–9.4) and phenol (pK=10.1–10.7). Corncob derived carbons showed high adsorption capacity to copper, especially at low pH. Maximum adsorption of methylene blue and iodine was observed for carbon with most developed porosity (RI=1.0).
