Abstract

This paper aims to critically evaluate the archaeological bone material relevant to the origin of thalassemia in Italy, and present the results of an investigation on 227 skeletal remains found in Lucania, a region whose colonization by the Greeks has recently been thoroughly studied. The conclusion is drawn that all the skeletal remains showing porotic hyperostosis found so far in Italy are unable to provide a solution to the problem of the origins of thalassemia in this country. Some main methodological principles are recommended in order to make investigations more rewarding in future.
