Abstract
Abstract Five out of the seven prevalent model mathematical equations resulted in better than the typical value of goodness of fit χ2=0.42 in the present least-squares fittings of Vickers microhardness Hv to total porosity Pt for our sintered solid solution (Al1−yCry)2O3 bodies of the system Al2O3–Cr2O3. The best fit among the five turned out to the simple power function, Hv(GPa)=Ho(1−APt)n=29.382(1+8.585Pt)−0.8663 with χ2=0.0137, an excellent fit. The simple form of the function facilitated easy incorporation of open porosity Po, closed porosity Pc and relative density dr as they are related by Pt=Po+Pc and Pt=(1−dr). The resulting Hv–Pt or Hv–dr relationships are graphically presented in detail.
