Abstract

After the Second World War, memorial parks became the most common war memorial dedicated to civilian victims. The paper discusses the history of these spatial units through an overview of the development of cemeteries during the 19th and 20th centuries and their genesis into war memorials after the Second World War, ways of commemorations, and memorialization in Serbia, with distinctive reference to the Memorial Park October in Kragujevac. The Memorial Park October in Kragujevac is one of the most important and, one could say, one of the oldest memorial parks in the world, dedicated to the civilian victims of the Second World War. Founded in 1953 in the area where thousands of citizens from Kragujevac were shot and buried in 30 graves on October 21st, 1941. The arrangement and construction took place in phases, and in order to see, in addition to the historical significance of this area, the aesthetic and artistic one, it is necessary to present a brief history of marking the places of death of the victims of the conflict, as well as the origin of memorial parks.
