Abstract

We demonstrated in the present investigation that, by analyzing the small-angle powder XRD pattern, we successfully determined not only the pore-to-pore distance but also the pore diameter of the mesoporous materials having a quasi two-dimensional hexagonal pore structure. It was found that the pore diameter values determined by this method were in good accordance with those derived from nitrogen gas adsorption measurement (Kruk–Jaroniec–Sayari method) for several kinds of mesoporous silicas and carbons. Furthermore, owing to the advantage of this determination method that it is applicable to the wet sample, we applied this method to the mesoporous sample immersed in the liquid whose bulk density is known to evaluate the density of framework materials. The derivation of the theoretical formula of the small-angle XRD pattern of the mesoporous materials is also described in this paper.
