Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper discusses the results of a numerical study of the effects of wellbore overpressure on the effective stress encountered by a PDC cutter. Results suggest that the length of time for the creation of the work face damage zone may strongly influence the effective rock strength felt by the bit in low strength formations. Field observations of large ( > 0.5 in.) cutter bit performance in weak formations can be explained by these model results.
