Abstract

Pore-forming cytolysins have been isolated from a wide variety of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. Some of them are the virulence factors for parasites such as bacteria and protozoa, the others being important factors in the defense system of host organisms. Pore-forming cytolysins are also taken up as models to study the mechanism of incorporation of water-soluble proteins into the lipid bilayer of cell membranes. This article refers to physical and chemical properties of membrane that affect binding, assembly and pore formation of Staphylococcus aureus α-toxin.
