Abstract

Many of the porcelains made at time (1686 to 1842) for the export trade had shapes and decorative motifs which were commissioned specifically for the Islamic market. Lan’s ‘strange’ vessels may well have included bases for huqqahs, rose-water sprinklers, and ewers derived from the forms found in Islamic metal wares. The existence of overland and maritime routes between China and Iran would have facilitated trade in cobalt blue, which was called Huihui qing , that is, ‘Islamic blue’. For instance, the human figure is central to the Persian miniature and other traditions such as the Ottoman miniature and Mughal painting, and it represents a good deal of the attractiveness of Islamic art for non-Muslims. Briefly stated, Sini script is the calligraphic style used in China for Arabic script. This precise attribution may have contributed to the pot’s appeal to potential bidders, and the vessel now resides in the collection of the Islamic Arts Museum, Malaysia.
