Abstract Through analysis of some environmental historical studies and their methodologies, this article discusses how this literature can incorporate three important epistemological issues of historical knowledge. Determinism is the first epistemological process discussed, followed by the traditional tendency of searching for historical origins. The third crucial point involves a discussion of some relevant historical ontological premises.
