Abstract

THE RELEVANCE OF ADDICTION RESEARCH AT AN INTERNATIONAL LEVEL Alcohol, tobacco and illicit drug use have a considerable impact on the mortality and morbidity of the global population, positioning them amongst the leading causes of early mortality and years lived with disability in most of the countries included in worldwide epidemiological studies (Degenhardt et al., 2008; Whiteford et al., 2013). The contribution of substance use to the global burden of disease supports the need for a coordinated international response to counter its harmful effect on public health.
