Abstract
This article discusses the life trajectory of Christiano Fettermann, a black man from the state of Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil which lived between the second half of the 19th century and the year of 1930. In addition of being a militant in the workers' cause, he was a collaborator between the years 1908 and 1911 of O Exemplo Journal, an important media of the black press. In this sense, throughout his life Fettermann was involved with both causes, articulating them at several Porto Alegre associative spaces in which he played roles. Thus, I shall investigate and attempt to better understand the possibilities outlined by this individual who lived and acted in a very complex period, in which heightened tensions involving the definitions of race/color, growing-social expectations associated with the beginning of the Republic, as well as the struggles for citizenship that were updated in the context of Brazilian post-abolition have surfaced.

Summary
Resumo: O presente artigo aborda a trajetória de vida de Christiano Fettermann, um homem negro gaúcho que viveu entre a segunda metade do século XIX e o ano de 1930. Além de militante da causa operária, Christiano foi colaborador entre os anos de 1908 e 1911 do Jornal O Exemplo, importante veículo da imprensa negra. Ao longo da sua vida teve envolvimento com ambas as causas, articulando-as nos diversos espaços associativos em que atuou na cidade de Porto Alegre. Desta forma, tenho como objetivo investigar e melhor compreender as possibilidades traçadas por esse indivíduo que viveu e atuou em um período bastante complexo, período esse marcado: pelo acirramento das tensões envolvendo as definições de raça/cor; pelas crescentes expectativas sociais associadas ao início da República; bem como pelas lutas por cidadania que emergiram no contexto do pós-abolição brasileiro.
