Abstract
The charge-transfer reactions of He 2 + with Kr and Xe at thermal energy have been studied in a helium afterglow. The relative populations of the product Kr + ( 2P 3/2, 1/2) and Xe + ( 2P 3/2, 1/2) spin-orbit states were determined by using state-selective formation of rare gas halide excimers from ion-recombination reactions of Rg + ( 2P 3/2, 1/2) with SF 6 − in a Kr/SF 6 or Xe/SF 6 mixture. A nearly statistical 2P 3/2/ 2P 1/2 ratio of ≈ 2 was found for both reactions, indicating that energy-resonance requirement is an unimportant factor in these charge-transfer reactions.
