Abstract

Summary This paper contains an account of the development of the French system of family allowances and kindred benefits. In the first part of the study, the origin and growth of the system is traced, the provisions of the Code de la Famille of 1939 are described, and the modifications introduced by the Vichy Government are considered. Developments after the Liberation will be dealt with in a subsequent article.
