Abstract

It is estimated that the global incidence of pancreatitis has increased from ∼1.0 million new cases per year in 1990 to ∼1.6 million new cases annually in 2017.1 In the United States, pancreatitis is the third most common gastrointestinal diagnosis requiring hospitalization.2 With rising rates of alcohol consumption and obesity, the incidence of pancreatitis is anticipated to continue to increase. Furthermore, the management of pancreatitis is highly resource intensive and often requires hospitalization, close monitoring, and therapeutic interventions or surgery to manage either the underlying etiology or pancreatitis-related complications.
