Abstract

In recent years the field of population and family planning has received a good deal of attention in the schools of public health in the United States. The author reviews the developments at California School of Public Health (Berkeley) Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health Harvard School of Public Health Michigan School of Public Health North Carolina School of Public Health Pittsburgh School of Public Health Tulane University and the University of Hawaii. The establishment of postgraduate public health schools in the United States dates back to 1918. 15 schools of public health in the United States and 2 in Canada are now accredited by the American Public Health Association. A few others have also awakened to the need of incorporating population studies in the curricula. The public health aspects of population and family planning draw from several disciplines or departments. A movement has originated in some schools for example Harvard Michigan and North Carolina to establish centers for population studies having university-wide participation.
