Abstract
Spin distributions in compound nuclear reactions initiated by heavy ions on nuclei in the rare earth region are investigated using the statistical model. A study of the competition between charged particle and neutron emission and between fission and neutron emission shows that the highest angular momentum states which are populated, decay predominantly by emission of alpha particles. As a result of this, the spin distributions in the final nuclei are approximately unaffected when the heavy ion energies are increased.
