Abstract
The socio-historical context into which western sports was introduced and popularized in India as well as in the hills of Darjeeling, was itself situated in the cultural transformation brought about by the British health, education and administration system. The people of Darjeeling hills also encountered with the concept of game ethics which is nothing but the disciplining of body and mind through sports and other physical activities in order to make them culturally inclined and submissive towards the British. Darjeeling Government School was a school for different races and communities. Sport being an integral part of culture has a symbolic role and representation in the society. British way of incorporating education system and its values inculcated in the masses created a unique cultural diffusion in Darjeeling where it became clearly visible in each and every aspect of the common masses.
