Abstract

The ‘ teach-yourself’ method in language learning has received little attention from language teaching professionals despite the fact that it is the only manner of instruction available to a considerable number of adult learners. It is argued that a survey of the method’s teaching manuals will show the historical continuity of this autonomous approach to language teaching and learning. In this article, trade, travel and migration are identified as circumstances which have for a long time created a need for ordinary people to study foreign languages on their own.
