Abstract
Why, when, and how can teaching aids as varied as Popsicle sticks, computers, and calculators be used? To respond to these questions we developed three separate lessons on division for fourth-grade classes, the first using a traditional manipulative aid (Popsicle sticks), the second, the computer, and the third, the calculator. In each lesson the aid (1) helps children develop the concept of division, (2) assists in practice with the algorithm, and (3) moves students beyond the algorithm to applications.
