Abstract

Abstract Twenty-six popliteal cysts arising in persons under 20 years of age have been excised. In no case was the cyst found to communicate with the knee-joint. Preoperative radiographs in 10 cases confirmed the absence of such a communication. Popliteal cysts in children are congenital bursae and not synovial herniations from the joint. The apparent disappearance of such cysts on flexing the knee is due to the displacement of the bursa to the medial aspect of the knee and not to the displacement of the fluid contents into the joint.
