Abstract

The proper renown of George Sherburn's monumental edition of Pope's Correspondence (Oxford, 1956) seems to have intimidated even the most assiduous writers of notes and queries. Of the reviewers, to my knowledge only two eminent scholars ventured to make detailed suggestions for the improvement of the text.1 However, in the past twenty-two years many new facts have come to light, and many invaluable reference aids not available to Sherburn have been published. It seems an opportune moment for more humble students of Pope to bring forward information to supplement and occasionally correct the edition. I offer here a sample list of such items.2 Most of the material has been drawn from standard reference manuals, and in such cases the source is not identified. All uncued references are to Sherburn's edition; indicates his article, Letters of Alexander Pope, Review of English Studies 9 (1958): 388-406; TE = Twickenham edition.
