Abstract

There is strong evidence demonstrating an association between periodontal disease and chronic disease because of poor oral care. Older adults with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, renal disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and respiratory and cardiovascular disorders are more vulnerable to the effects of periodontal disease on the progression of these comorbid conditions. Thus, practicing preventative oral care and regular oral exams is imperative for the overall health of the elderly population. New strategies and guidelines are needed to identify and care for patients at risk.
