Abstract

Poly[{(R)-(-)-2-thymin-1-yl-2,3-dihydrofuran}-alt-(maleic anhydride)] and poly[{(R)-(-)-2-thymin-1-yl-2,3-dihydrofuran)-alt-(vinylene carbonate)] containing six repeating units per chain were synthesized by radical copolymerizations of the relevant monomers. Hydrolysis of these polymers yielded polymeric analogues 4 and 7 of poly(thymidylic acid) in which the methylene phosphate groups are substituted by dicarboxy or dihydroxyethylene groups. Copolymers 4 and 7 exhibit 52 and 45% hypochromicities, respectively, in aqueous solutions which are due to the base stacking
