Abstract
The prevalence of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) in persons aged over 50 is about 700 per 100 0001,2. The diagnosis is based on a symptom complex of proximal myalgia and stiffness developing late in life usually associated with a raised erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). A rapid response to low-dose oral steroids (10-20 mg prednisolone daily) is commonly thought to support the diagnosis3,4. PMR is, however, a diagnosis of exclusion.
