Abstract
Corrosion is a major concern worldwide as it causes considerable economical losses. Chromium-based coatings were used in the past for corrosion protection but their applications as corrosion protective coatings are restricted due to their high toxicity. Finding environment-friendly materials for effective corrosion protection is challenging, and this chapter discusses some of these challenges and possible solutions in this area. The chapter also provides good coverage of different techniques used to study the effectiveness of corrosion protection. It also covers in detail some of the latest developments in polymeric nanocomposites for corrosion protection. Some examples include the use of conducting polymers, metal oxides, MXenes, and bio-based materials for corrosion protection. The final section briefly discusses the main challenges and future perspectives in the area. A rich discussion is provided for anti-corrosion mechanisms, synthetic strategies, and experimental design to provide some enlightenment to readers to generate novel ideas within this field.
