Abstract

Eugenol is a paleyellow oily liquid which can be extracted from essential oils such as clove and cinnamon oils. This study aimed to modify eugenol and to reduce environmental pollution caused by polymers by utilizing natural materials through polymerization of eugenol with concentrated nitric acid (HNO3) and media of acetic acid (CH3COOH). Various of acetic acid media used were 5%, 25%, and 50%. The result of polieugenol was blackish brown, in the form of shiny gels, smelling of cloves, and soluble in ethanol, slightly soluble in chloroform and insoluble in benzene and water. The product polieugenol was washed with aquades. The yields before washing were 142.75%, 141.25% and 138.75%, and the yield after washing were 88.265%, 88.397% and 87.248%. The Fourier Transform InfraRed (FT-IR) spectrophotometer results showed that the polymerization did not occur perfectly showing by absorption peaks of CH=CH2 and C = C groups at 995.27 and 1635.89 cm-1.

METODE PENELITIAN

Alat yang digunakan yaitu Gelas ukur, Neraca digital, Spektrofotometri IR, Corong, Gelas kimia 50 mL, Pipet tetes, Spatula, Botol Semprot, Magnetik stirrer, Erlenmeyer 250 mL, Gelas ukur 10 mL, Pipet volume, Tabung reaksi, Rak tabung. Sampel yang digunakan pada penelitian ini yaitu Eugenol murni, Asam Nitrat, Asam Asetat 50%, 25%, dan 5%, Aquades, Alumunium foil, Larutan Metanol, Kertas Saring. Polimerisasi eugenol menggunakan katalis asam nitrat dengan media asam asetat. Sampel yang digunakan dalam proses polimerisasi adalah eugenol hal ini karena eugenol memiliki tiga gugus (Cholid dkk., 2018). Tahap pertama dalam proses polimerisasi eugenol yaitu memasukkan 4gram eugenol kedalam gelas beker, kemudian mencampurkan 3,2 mL asam nitrat pekat dengan 0,8 mL media. Penambahan campuran asam nitrat pekat dengan media asam asetat ini dilakukan tetes demi tetes sampai polimer mengental dan mengeluarkan asap. Pengujian kelarutan Pengujian kelarutan dilakukan dengan cara melarutkan 0,25gram polieugenol di masukkan kedalam 3 tabung reaksi kemudian masing masing tabung ditambahkan 2,5 mL pelarut etanol, benzene, dan kloroform lalu di kocok, Kemudian di amati. Analisis dilakukan pada 4 sampel yaitu eugenol, dan polieugenol dengan konsentrasi 5%, 25% serta 50%
