Abstract

The polymerization of butyl methacrylate (BMA) at ∼60°C above the polymer glass transition temperature has been studied by determining the spectra of the scattered light, and the angular dependence of the total (integrated) scattering intensity. Both phonon velocity and attenuation show a relaxation behaviour during conversion, but the frequency dependent macroscopic shear viscosity does not contribute to the relaxation mechanism. The behaviour of the Rayleigh-Brillouin intensity ratio and the dissymmetry of the total scattered intensity shows that small regions of local inhomogeneities at low concentrations are formed during the polymerization reaction.
