Abstract

AbstractA study has been made of the polymerization of acetylene, propyne, and butyne‐1 using aluminum triisobutyl, n‐butyllithium, or zinc diethyl in combination with titanium tetrachloride as catalyst. Optimum conditions for polymerization were determined by varying the catalyst composition. The major product was a black insoluble polymer whose spectrum indicates a high degree of conjugation. A small quantity of soluble low molecular weight polymer was also obtained. Reactions were run at atmospheric pressure and 21–62°C.
