Abstract

AbstractA graft copolymer of polyacrylonitrile with starch was obtained by radical polymerization of acrylonitrile in the presence of ceric salt and amylose, accompanied by a considerable amount of homopolymer of acrylonitrile. The rate of polymerization was faster in dimethyl sulfoxide than in water. The following empirical rate equations were presented. equation image where A, B and C are constants and [S], [M] and [TCe4+] are the concentration of starch, acrylonitrile and total ceric compounds respectively. The differences between the two equations were discussed.
