Abstract

Design, fabrication and characterisation of a polymeric optical spot-size transformer formed by a laterally tapered, buried core is described. Only standard photolithography and dry etching have been used to fabricate this transformer. A fibre to waveguide insertion loss of 0.7 dB has been measured, compared to 2.5 dB without the transformer.
