Abstract

This chapter deals with the kinetic laws and the mechanism of hydrolytic degradation of polymers, particularly the heterochain polymers or those containing heteroatoms in the side groups. The following problems are discussed: catalysis in aggressive liquid media, such as solutions of acids, bases and salts; the reactivity and mechanisms of transformation of chemically unstable bonds in various polymers; specific features of the chemical degradation of polymers compared with that of low-molecular- compounds; diffusion of aggressive media in polymers; prediction of polymer stability in aggressive media; the influence of the medium on the mechanical properties of polymers. Examples are given of the use of hydrolytic degradation as a method of modification of polymeric products.
