Abstract
Abstract We report a facile wet chemical method for the “wire-in-tube” dual mineralization of tomato mosaic virus. The biomineralization process is effectively mediated by poly(vinylpyrrolidone), the first time this has been shown for a tobamovirus. The interior 4 nm cavity of the virus is mineralized with Pt to form a ca. 3.5 nm diameter nanowire, and the outer capsid of the protein is mineralized with iron oxide to form a ca. 50 nm diameter encasing tube. The resulting dual-mineralized nanocomposite was characterized by a range of analysis techniques.
