Abstract

Polymer electrolyte membrane based on sulfonated poly(phenylene oxide) (sPPO) with high proton conductivity is prepared and its characteristics for VRFB are analyzed. Synthesis of sPPO polymer is confirmed by FT-IR and NMR analysis, and the basic properties of polymer electrolyte membrane are tested by DSC, water uptake, and dimensional change. The thermal and physical properties of sPPO polymer electrolyte membrane are in correspondence with DuPont’s Nafion 115 membrane, which is commonly used for VRFB. Therefore, it is found that sPPO with low cost and high performance can be an alternative polymer electrolyte membrane to commercial Nafion membrane.
