Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Maternal obesity and PCOS are associated with increased risk of miscarriage, pregnancy complications, and fetal morbidity. Mechanisms responsible for these outcomes are unclear, but may involve metabolic-induced changes in the oocytes. Data from diabetic, insulin-resistant, and obese mice reveal smaller oocytes; findings which are linked to adverse embryonic and fetal development. If similar human conditions also negatively impact oocyte quality, it may account in part for the adverse reproductive sequelae of PCOS/obesity.
