Abstract

The molecular structures of a number of tetra- and pentacyclic aromatic hydrocarbons present in extracts of Victorian brown coal have been unambiguously established by 1H-NMR. The determined structures support the hypothesis that these polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are diagenetically derived from triterpenoid precursors based on the oleanane, ursane and lupane skeletons. The occurrence of diastereoisomerism in these PAHs has been revealed for the first time and the diastereomeric configurations of one pair of triaromatic compounds ( XI and XII) defined.
