Abstract

Abstract7.7′‐[para‐Phenylene‐7.7′‐(dioxo)]diheptanoic acid (I), 1.18‐(6.13‐dioxo)octadecanedicarboxylic acid (II), and 7.7′‐[para‐phenylene‐5.5′‐(dioxo)]diheptanoic acid (III) were polycondensed readily with α,ω‐diamines to high molecular weight, light colored, crystalline polyamides. The resins prepared below 215°C. were essentially linear and demonstrated fiber‐forming and cold‐drawing properties. Above this temperature substantial crosslinking and branching occurred during the polycondensation. Depending on the degree of cross‐linking, film‐forming, molding, or rigid foam‐like resins were obtained which were thermostable up to 280°C.Acids (I) and (II) were copolycondensed with adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine. The resulting polyamides were partially cross‐linked.
