Abstract

Continued studies of the photorelease from polyamide microcapsules show that there are two dominant mechanisms of release of core contents — photorupture and forced diffusion. The latter is important for low light levels, semi-porous membranes and small microcapsules. However, in most of the highly cross-linked membrane microcapsules, including the double wall ones, we were able to rupture microcapsules of all sizes, including the smallest ones. A model for photorupture (the 'fission' model) was developed, starting from the behaviour of individual microcapsules and integrating over the whole population. This model gives t 1 2 ; values in reasonable agreement with the observed ones. Also a model for forced diffusion was developed, and gives an S-shaped release curve too, but we were not able to get this curve in terms of directly measurable parameters.
