Abstract

AbstractSummary: Novel crosslinked poly(aspartic acid) super‐absorbent resins have been prepared using a chemical crosslinking agent and a freeze/thawing technique. This resin shows improved swelling behaviors as a result of the crystallization that serves as the physical crosslink. For further identification of microstructures and properties, SEM, DSC, X‐ray diffraction, and FT‐IR analyses have been used. To a certain extent, final structures and properties can be controlled by regulating the freeze/thawing conditions, including not only the number of freeze/thawing cycles, but also the temperature and time of both freezing and subsequent thawing. Its swelling behavior is significantly influenced by environmental conditions, such as ionic strength. Furthermore, the swelling ratio is also investigated in various physiological solutions.Swelling ratios of the novel PAsp super‐absorbers obtained with increasing number of freeze/thawing cycles.magnified imageSwelling ratios of the novel PAsp super‐absorbers obtained with increasing number of freeze/thawing cycles.
