Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the experience of the outreach project Food and Nutrition Security (SAN, in the Portuguese acronym) for the diagnosis and public policy proposal for the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes, northern region of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The project was carried out in partnership with the State University of the Northern Rio de Janeiro Darcy Ribeiro (UENF, in the Portuguese acronym). The research developed is based on the concept of SAN, which refers to the guarantee of regular access to food as a social right. The methodology used in this article follows the format of the outreach project in the field, as well as in documentary research and semi-structured interviews. The analysis of the results demonstrate that municipal SAN initiatives need to be consolidated. It was also observed that there is no interaction between local government departments concerning the SAN isolated actions. The deadlocks are faced with greater participation of the university in the implementation of the policy and proximity with the SAN municipal council. Based on the study, it is possible to identify alternatives that help the development of the SAN policy for the municipality studied, and that address the gaps.
