Abstract

The objective of this paper is to analyze how private initiatives and public policies are articulated in the activation of local assets. We will approach these initiatives from an international discursive framework that emphasizes the need to make visible the plurality of values, meanings and experiences that concentrate these heritages, placing the focus on one of the emerging typologies: the industrial heritage, characterized as a complex of material and symbolic elements, uses and knowledge, linked to the cultures of work and the processes of industrialization. We will study two cases in Cuba and Spain, consisting of the rehabilitation of old oil factories for alternative uses, associated with the hotel industry and art exhibitions. Through a historical reading that allows us to situate the emergence of these elements and the transformations they have undergone over time, we will reflect on the strategies, potentialities and risks associated with the processes of contemporary heritage activation.
