Abstract
Abstract : The Air Force and in particular the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC), has invested heavily in pollution prevention (P2) for the past several years. The objective of these investments was primarily to reduce the use of hazardous materials in accordance with Air Force goals. There was no regulatory requirement. During the same period, a concerted effort in the environmental compliance arena drastically reduced the number of permit noncompliances to a relatively low, static number. Many of these are difficult to resolve using conventional approaches. AFMC is now challenged with achieving complete environmental compliance in spite of rapidly declining budgets. AFMC recognizes that a new way of doing business is needed in order to achieve their objective: the overall reduction in costs and risks associated with environmental permits. The new business paradigm is Compliance Through Pollution Prevention (CTP).
