Abstract

Abstract Alberta's Energy Resources Conservation Board was given statutory responsibility for pollution control in the oil and gas industry pollution control in the oil and gas industry in 1970. This paper describes the history and objectives of pollution control in the industry and provides detailed descriptions of the more important pollution control regulations applicable to drilling, producing and gas processing operations. A brief summary of the size of the industry is given to show its importance in the economy and environment of Alberta. The province's natural environment and its population distribution are briefly population distribution are briefly described to indicate the manner in which drilling and production activities have affected Alberta and its people.
