Abstract

Summary A pollen-specific glutamate dehydrogenase has been characterized during microsporogenesis in Capsicum annuum L. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of anther produces two isozymes, GDH I and GDH II. The presence of GDH I is observed in the sporophytic tissues of the plant including anthers and ovaries; hence, GDH I is considered as sporophyte-specific. Expression of GDH II is found only in pollen grains; therefore, GDH II is not only gametophyte-specific but also pollen-specific. Pollen-specific GDH II is observed after microspore mitosis and reaches maximum at the time of anthesis.
