Abstract

The pollen morphology of many samples of 43 Turkish Iris L. (Iridaceae) taxa has been examined by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. It is suggested that some palynological characters, such as pollen type and the presence of anoperculum, could be of taxonomic value at the subgeneric level. Infrasubgenericvariations have also been observed and their status is discussed. In addition, evolutionary trends from monosulcate through zonasulcate to clypeate pollen types have been established. Trends toward greater pollen size and thicker exine have also been observed.
