Abstract

I examine the current context of populism, its larger theoretical dimensions, and its relation to the politics of performance to refresh and redefine the meaning of ‘the people’ in order to animate a new collective political subject. Performance can selectively retrieve and recuperate aspects of the past, and offer ways of activating resistance to the right-wing populism we are now experiencing, in part by showing how to construct a form of left-wing populism. The crucible of class and race, with particular reference to Trump’s America, provides the context for theatrical performances that seek to redefine the collective political subject.
