Abstract
Public space is at stake in many social and political conflicts. Historically, public space has been urban space: at least, it has encircled the city as a ‘green belt’, an extended common ground whose public nature is established as a principle which guides its private use and appropriation. In general, however, public space is located in the heart of the city, is the material setting of its social and political centrality.
