Abstract
In this chapter I present the basic dilemmas in the relationship between government and society after the 1989 turning point in Poland. In order to describe these relations I will draw on the concepts of legitimation as they provide a suitable framework for the analysis of the processes taking place between the political and institutional system and society. I will be concerned with the basic chances of, and threats to, political legitimacy during the transitional period in Poland. Before moving on to a detailed presentation of my major theses it is essential to define the transitional period as this will bring out the nature and problems of legitimation in contemporary Poland.
