Abstract

Assuming that Egyptian society was still a class society in which one had to struggle to prevent the domination of one class over the others, the left called for an approach which would make the ASU a powerful, political organization, independent of the state. It would be completely separated from state power. Arguing that the majority had rejected both parties and a single party, it opted for platforms with in the ASU. Freedom of opinion within the alliance is the only alternative to expression of opinion outside of it and it is the rational means for endeavoring to discover the reasonable solutions for realizing shared interests and the true obligations of conflicting interests. The regime certainly acted as though the platforms would matter by moving forcefully to capture all the available political resources for the centre. Indeed, it moved so forcefully to ensure that the centre would prevail that it cast considerable doubt on ‘openness’ and ‘fairness’ of the election.
