Abstract
Political liberalization is evidenced throughout the Middle East as new experiments in democracy have occurred in a variety of countries including Yemen, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, and Tunisia. The region also is experiencing a resurgence of Islamic activism fueled by rampant poverty, increasing unemployment and underemployment, as well as disillusionment with secular rule and Western cultural influence.
